Sculptors Manifesto

It is an artist’s job to simply bring what’s on the inside and show it to the outside world. A successful sculptor must do this in a dynamic and visually stunning manor. Good Sculpture is like a thumb pressing against the pulse of living that relates simple truth, about a very complicated process.

By drawing from my personal experiences I hope to tap into something honest and real, which translates universally, the reality of human experience, to others. I feel that many experiences may not be put into words because they transcend the categories of written and oral language. Whether it’s because of my inability to communicate successfully orally or languages inherent flaw to be misinterpreted, I feel using the visual language of sculpture to be more universally understandable.

I hope my sculptures draw the viewer into the world of the created narrative and encourage them to see something in a new light. I’m attempting to arrest the mind and imagination with a provocative crystallization of insight I’ve experienced.

I tend to use varying layers of content and imagery to construct a visual narrative the viewer may walk down and explore. The superficial layer is there to gain the notice of the viewer and pull them in. The use of visually arresting surfaces, interesting patterns, and elegant and iconic imagery are there to catch the viewer’s eye. From there I hope to spark their curiosity enough to pull them in closer to examine the piece where the finer details will create a moving narrative, in which the content will become evident. By using imagery I hope to allow the viewer to relate to my very personal experience in a unique way. I feel that by using abstracted forms, the pieces are more universally understandable and less likely to be tainted and misinterpreted by the viewers cultural baggage.

I hope to appeal to the imagination, to that place within us, in which resides our images of reality and our images of life itself. From there I hope to spark a different way of seeing the world, to bring about new and possibly different images for shaping our deeper understanding of the experience of life.
